Episode 410: Tips for Traveling with Kids this Summer with Lola Dweck

About Lola

Lola is a Mexican-American recipe developer, writer, and cooking instructor who loves sharing her culture with the world. Growing up in California and spending summers in Mexico, Lola celebrates her family’s Mexican recipes and vibrant culture through Lola’s Cocina.

The inspiration for Lola’s Cocina came about over ten years ago when she realized that treasured family recipes, some dating back many generations, must not only be experienced through our taste buds, but also preserved in writing. This is when she began to jot down recipes that she learned from family and friends, as well as some that she created herself, or stumbled upon serendipitously. Her dream is to continue to share recipes through many generations

Episode 302: Keeping it Real with the Super Mamas: Staying Motivated through Tough Times

Good days and bad days are totally normal, and this vent session will remind you that we all go through it!

First, Paulina starts us off with the story of how she lost her toenail. We’ll give you fair warning: if you’re squeamish, you might want to skip to minute 12 of our episode. 🙈 And that’s not all that’s happened to her lately! Her husband got covid, and so did she! Remember when she and her family first tested positive for covid in 2020? Then Bricia talks about working on her latest cookbook and the stress of creating new recipes on top of work and mom life. She gets busy and realizes that it’s okay to outsource sometimes.

Ultimately we’re still learning that even during some of our toughest days, there is always goodness to look forward to, a light at the end of the tunnel.

Pick or Tip of the Week

Bricia is watching Inventing Anna on Netflix. It’s so good that you’ll want to binge it all in one night.

Paulina just watched Cheer on Netflix. The motivation and determination the athletes have really helped her push through during her injury and covid. Paulina is also obsessed with Coach Monica’s leadership skills and is taking notes from her too.

Paulina mentions having a home birth with her last daughter to avoid needles. Listen to that episode here.

Watch Dopesick on Hulu. An incredible story, but scary reality.

Paulina was riding dirty around her house on a medical scooter like this one.

Remember when Paulina got covid for the first time in 2020?

Lastly, if you don’t have our Oaxaca cookbook then what are you waiting for??

Episode 275: Keeping It Real with the Super Mamas: Post-Vaccine Travel, Birthdays & the Bulgaro Lady

Are you ready for a sister update? Because we’re ready to spill the tea! Bricia tells us about her first trip post-covid vaccine and while she had a little bit of anxiety getting to her destination, she is really thankful she was able to getaway. Paulina is talking about her new healthy habits and becoming the búlgaro lady. We also talk about Eddie’s second birthday party ever, Bricia’s extra decorations and as always, we’re sharing our picks and tips for the week. #AddToCart

P.S. Shoutout to our favorite Evelyn from Harlow Planning, balloons from Lotus Party Co. and installation from Preferred Projects for creating this incredible set up for Eduardo’s 6th birthday! Nothing wrong with a little extraness. 😉Check out his backyard party set up in the gallery above and reach out to these amazing vendors for your next party!

Broccoli

Blueberry

Blackberry

Almond butter

Ginger

Tumeric

Pick or Tip of the Week

Last week, Fernando asked Paulina if she wanted to go to the movies. Some movie theaters are allowing you you rent out the whole room for yourself up to twenty people - your family or whoever is in your bubble. They went to the AMC in Monterey Park and everyone loved it! This is going to spoil the kids because they were able to walk around throughout the movie and yell at each other. It’s a good sign that everything is slowly getting back to a new normal. Check out local theaters in your area to see if they offer this cool opportunity!

Bricia’s pick is a kids’ finance app called Greenlight. It’s a savings + spending app that she found when she was trying to figure out how to pay Eddie from his business since he has to pay for his new iPad (if you missed the story about that, listen to the intro of THIS episode and check out his tie dye shop). Greenlight is a prepaid debit card made just for kids. You can transfer money, send allowances when they complete chores, see their expenses and how much money they have. Eddie used his debit card to pay for his new iPad and his independence even shocked the guy at the Apple store! You have to listen to the episode to hear about the rest of his first big purchase.

Episode 266: The Realities of Blogger Life with Jacqui Saldaña of Baby Boy Bakery

One of our favorite amigas is back on the show! This week we talk to Jacqui Saldaña of Baby Boy Bakery. She’s one of the OG mama bloggers and has been creating content for family for years. This week we talk to Jacqui about the inspiration behind her newest content and recent website relaunch. We also talk about the ups & downs of quarantine life, how this year has changed her as a mom, and how much we all miss Disneyland! 😩Chatting with Jacqui is always such a good time - she’s real, honest, and hilarious! She has so many goals and ideas coming soon, we can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

Before the episode, we’re also talking about how big Augustina is getting! She’s getting ready to start her solid foods journey and Bricia is really focused on using the RIE parenting method again. We did an episode about this technique a few years ago, but we’re thinking it’s time for a refresher course! You can listen to that episode on Spotify here.

Also, Paulina might have shared a secret about her growing family on the episode. 😉 But you’ll have to tune in to find out!

More about Jacqui Saldaña: Jacqui is the author of Baby Boy Bakery, an inspirational online space that offers the tips and tools you need to feel the most confident within your kitchen. Jacqui began Baby Boy Bakery ten years ago as a place for families to gain insight on cooking simple meals and creating lasting memories together in the kitchen. It has since evolved into an uplifting space giving viewers an honest look inside Jacqui's home, as she invites everyone to cook alongside her and her little ones.

As a mother of three she keeps it real and simple, perfect for parents looking to whip up a tasty meal while also soaking up the time they have with their family. Jacqui shares delicious recipes, kids activities, and personal stories that resonate with most. She writes candidly about her journey through parenthood helping thousands of parents feel less alone as they face the hard times along with the beautiful ones. Her community loves her for being relatable and honest. Her fierce passion lies with food and family. You can count on Jacqui for recipes that will make you feel proud, fun ideas to make the most of your family time and stories that will help you hold on to joy!

Cookies! Because she’s a stress/emotional baker. Check out some delicious cookie recipes from her site including Sugar Cookies 4 Ways and a simple Brownie Cookie recipe.

She also loves organizing her closets. So relaxing!

Pick or Tip of the Week

Bricia is loving two protein powders right now. It’s so easy for her to add them to morning smoothies when she needs a quick breakfast.

  1. Ora Organic - There are a few different flavors but she loves vanilla.

  2. Four Sigmatic - This plant based protein gives Bricia so much energy, which is helpful because she’s detoxing from caffeine this month.

Paulina’s pick is also health related. She recently read an article about gut health and was inspired to do some more research for her nine year old, Krista, who is lactose intolerant. These Garden of Life probiotics for kids have helped her so much! Her skin condition and overall gut health have really improved. It reminded of an older episode we did about poop - yes, poop and the mind/gut connection. Maybe it’s time for a refresher episode on gut health too!.

Episode 214: Oaxaca Cookbook: Writing from the Heart of @theglutster, Javier Cabral

l.jpeg

Get excited for this new episode! First, our family cookbook, OAXACA: Home Cooking From the Heart of Mexico, is out today! (Get it on Amazon now - bit.ly/OaxacaCookbook) We’re celebrating by talking to our friend of over a decade and co-writer of the book, Javier Cabral. The Glutster has been writing about food since he was 16 years old and now he’s the editor of LA TACO. We talk about how his obsession with food began and how he took something negative in his life and turned it into a lifelong career.  We also discuss  the year long process of writing the Oaxaca Cookbook, and the respect he has for all the women in his life. This episode will make you laugh hard, your heart swoon, and your stomach hungry!

Pick or Tip of the Week

The Lopez-Velasquez birthdays have finally finished, but Paulina is sharing a great party hack that you’ll love. Since her daughters’ birthdays are back to back to back, she decided not to throw any birthday parties this year. Instead, she bought balloons by the dozen at Target, different character balloons for each of the girls (like unicorns!) and golden number balloons for their age. Paulina also bought a small helium tank, which was her only investment for birthdays this year. It looked like a big party for the girls for a small price!

Bricia is really trying to keep up with her no shopping vow, so she’s turning her pick of the week into “things she would have bought but didn't.” 😂 Her friend, Martha, is so stylish and wore a beautiful knitted, unstructured coat during their trip to Nashville two weeks ago. If you’re on the hunt for a nice fall coat, go to Macys.com and search for “Mango coat.”

Episode 211: Healthy Living at Every Age with Dr. Sylvia Melendez-Klinger

Sylvia Klinger Headshot 2.jpeg

This post was brought to you by Aguacates Frescos – Saborea Uno Hoy. We received compensation to write this post, but all opinions expressed are our own.

Happy October! New month, new episode. This week, we speak to another returning guest, Dr. Sylvia Meléndez-Klinger, Registered Dietician and spokesperson for Aguacates Frescos – Saborea Uno Hoy. We’re talking about healthy living at every age and the benefits of eating fruits & veggies with lutein like delicious aguacate. Want to learn more about how to keep your brain healthy and possibly even help your kids perform better in school? You’ll want to listen to this episode!

Our Conversation with Dr. Klinger

What is lutein? Tell us more about it!

How does lutein help support healthy eyes?

What is cognitive health?

So there is a potential connection between lutein and our kids performing better in school? And, also a connection between lutein and keeping brains healthy as we get older?

I am not sure if the foods my family like have a lot of lutein. What foods are good sources of lutein?

What are other nutritional benefits of avocado for people of every age?

Pick or Tip of the Week

Bricia really really loves vegetables and she’s also a fan of organizing. She recently started using the Rubbermaid FreshWorks Produce Saver 3-piece, and with her mom as her witness, it actually works! It keeps all the produce much fresher. Bricia even took her produce drawers out of her refrigerator. If you have the space in your fridge, you can keep your fruits and veggies fresher for longer with these containers.

Paulina is the one with a bougie pick this week! She is loving this new lunchbox for Zixta - OmieBox Bento Box for Kids - Insulated Bento Lunch Box. It comes with a thermos that keeps food hot or cold for lunch, and it also has a handle which is great because you don’t need to buy another lunch box or bag to put it in.

Episode 203: All Things Hatch Chile with Chef Ida Rodriguez of @melissasproduce

shownotes2.jpg

Check it out, it’s a new episode! This week we interview Chef Ida Rodriguez, a corporate chef at Melissa’s Produce, the largest distributor of produce in the United States 🥕🌽🌶 (and at our restaurant!). Hatch Chile season only comes once a year and Chef Ida is teaching us all about it - the history, its heat levels and the BEST ways to eat the chiles. Stay tuned to the end of the episode to find out how you can experience a live chile roasting, and make sure you listen to the episode with snacks, because it’s going to make you hungry! 🤤

Before the interview, Bricia talks about how she’s hooked on a new show, Euphoria, and how the female characters make her nervous to ever have a daughter. Paulina also had her cumbia party last weekend and it was so much fun! It was chill, there was good bites of food, and even the cops made an appearance! 🚔🚨 It might have to be an annual party. 😉 They also attended an all-women-in-the-restaurant-industry brunch and had a great time speaking with so many empowering intellectual women.

On another note, we want to send love, healing energy & prayers to the families of the victims and all others affected by the senseless shootings at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. We talk about the festival during this episode, but we recorded the interview prior to the incident which is why we don’t mention it during the episode. We’re sending lots of light to all those suffering because of these shootings.

Pick or Tip of the Week

Paulina is currently loving the lotion she was gifted by Leah of Brujita Skincare. It’s a Palo Santo + Jasmine lotion. Lately she’s been having issues with perfumes on skin, but this after applying this lotion, the scent really mellows out and she’s received so many compliments. Follow @brujitaskincare on Instagram and check out her restock on brujitaskincare.com in August!

Bricia’s pick is Euphoria on HBO because it’s THAT good. Watch it here.

Paulina gave us a couple of great ways to incorporate milk in your every day! Add milk to frijoles to make them creamy, corn flakes, leche & platano is always a winner or make yourself a delicious licuado de platano y nuez or de fresa and top it off with some ground cinnamon & the best part of it all, is that it’s nutritious- From whole milk to flavored to fat-free milk – even lactose free milk, all of them contain 9 essential nutrients, including 8 grams of high quality protein, calcium, vitamin D and potassium.
