Self Care Looks different when you become a mom

Small things are big wins for new mothers, be kind to yourself

A recent survey by Marias Gamesa found that Latina moms recognize the importance of pursuing personal interests to balance motherhood, even though 45% occasionally feel guilty about it.

Episode 412: Building a Village for New Moms, a Cafecito with Marias Gamesa

This May, we’re so excited to team up with Marias Gamesa in this amazing effort to help moms engage in real conversations about motherhood and cultivate a community.

Growing up, Marias Gamesa was a staple in our house, and Bricia even uses it for her famous mole recipe. This year, they have launched the Cafecito con Marias Gamesa campaign. You know we love our cafecito, and we love to chat - that’s exactly what the Super Mamás podcast is all about. It’s even better when it’s a space for conversations with other Latina moms - brought together to speak on these important topics by Marias Gamesa. Over the next two episodes, we’re having a cafecito takeover and welcoming some very exciting guests from the Marias Gamesa Squad - a group of four Latina moms and content creators who will share their realities of motherhood with us - especially when it comes to building a village of support with family, friends, and other moms like us. This is one of the few topics we’ll dive into during this Marias Gamesa takeover that stem from their recent survey on modern-day motherhood.

This week’s guests, part of the Marias Gamesa Squad, are Gabby Carlin, a mommy of three and content creator, and Rossini Perez, a mother of three, lunch-obsessed content creator and cookbook author - we are going to dish into some of the key areas where modern-day mamás need support, community and conversation, and encourage our listeners to join in on the conversation and do the same.

Our Conversation with Gabby & Rossini

Motherhood feels lonely sometimes:

Finding your people, your tribe either in person or social Media is important when becoming a mom. You were not meant to do this by yourself.

How did you find your village?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help: Motherhood is a journey and we all need a helping hand.

Lean on the wisdom of your own Madre and Abuela

In a recent survey by Marias Gamesa, despite 64% of Latina moms sharing they have a support systems, 1 in 5 stated that they face tough parenting moments alone.

What are the biggest lessons that you have taken from your own mother?

Patience is Key, try your best to enjoy the moment, time goes by way too fast

Structure and routine are helpful tools. Gaby and Rossini give us a play by play of their day.

Don’t compare yourself to others, specially social media. Motherhood is messy for everyone, you are doing great !

Marias Gamesa recent survey also found that 62% of moms report feeling relieved after connecting with their own mothers after challenging parenting moments

What are some of you favorite memories with you mom, and how do you want to relive those with your own children ?

Gabby and Rossini share their favorite memories and how they are trying to create new memories through traveling and shopping days!

We share some our favorite remedios learned from our own mamas

Despite almost 90% of Latina mothers indicating that they feel at ease with reaching out to their own mom or mom-like figure for parenting support, Marias Gamesa survey indicated that a shocking 70% of Latina mothers feel too overwhelmed or feel like they don’t have enough time to even call their mothers

Pick or Tip of the Week

Bricia’s pick is Sneakerella on Disney+. It’s basically Cinderella but a dude with sneakers, and Eddie loves it. The music, singing and dancing is great! It’s a great pick for kids since they’re going to be spending more time at home now that it’s summer vacation.

Paulina’s tip is actually a tip from Patty Rodriguez that they picked up during their short trip to Texas.  When it’s really hot out and you’re wearing a hat, grab a few small ice cubes and stick them in the seam of your hat. It’s great for sport days, summer camp, traveling - whenever you’ll be outside and need to cool off.

Episode 313: When Business and Motherhood Meet with Ellen Marie Bennett, founder of Hedley & Bennett

Who knew that becoming a mom is so much like running a business? Only our friend, Ellen Marie Bennett. She’s a new mom, founder of the brand Hedley & Bennett, and an incredibly accomplished woman who has changed the culinary industry. She talks about her birth story (including her 40 hour labor!), why it’s necessary for both parents to be a part of the postpartum experience, and how becoming a mother has changed her perspective as a business owner. She may be a new mama, but she has been exuding super mama vibes for a long time!

More about Ellen:  Growing up, Ellen Bennett, the founder and Chief Brand Officer of Hedley & Bennett, the leading Los Angeles based culinary brand, found herself spending summers in her native Mexico learning to cook with her abuelita. Soon after graduating high school, Ellen found herself back in Mexico City attending culinary school where she would rekindle the joys of her summer cooking adventures while learning the skills needed to tackle the hustle of the professional kitchen. Back in L.A., she put her training to work cooking in two Michelin Star restaurants, Providence and Baco Mercat. It was during this time working on the line that she experienced a “uniform” that was not aligned with the creativity and confidence found in the kitchen. This led to the vision for Hedley & Bennett; make the best aprons in the world by marrying the needs of professional chefs with the design trends for today's discerning consumers.

Today, Hedley & Bennett makes culinary workwear and gear that outfits over 6,000 restaurants, hotels, coffee shops, resorts and hundreds of thousands of home cooks all over the world. This evolution has also led to creative, out-of-the-box collaborations with brands and partners such as the Grateful Dead, Vans, Madewell, Parachute Home, Rifle Paper Co., Product (RED) and more.

In early 2020, Ellen pivoted the resources of her company during the global COVID-19 pandemic to make masks to meet the needs of both professionals and consumers while donating hundreds of thousands of masks to front line workers.

In April of 2021, Ellen released her first book Dream First, Details Later, which outlines her personal playbook of putting your inner worrier on silent and leaping into action. Peppered with unfiltered behind-the-scenes stories and colorful illustrations, the book empowers readers with the tools they need to bring their boldest and best ideas to life.

Ellen and the Hedley & Bennett story has been featured in the New York Times, Fast Company, Inc., Forbes, Entrepreneur,  Bon Appetit, Martha Stewart, the Ellen DeGeneres Show, the Today Show and more. Ellen lives in Echo Park with her husband Casey, their brand-new baby boy Nico, their pet pig Oliver, and six chickens.

The story of Hedley & Bennett

“It started with this decision and this mental shift from no to yes and then taking the actions necessary which is very much like running a business.” - Ellen, on deciding she was ready to start a family

“There are crazy similarities with business and motherhood and I’m only 5 months in.” - Ellen

“It’s incredibly important that both that both the man and the woman show up for postpartum because it’s so fucking hard. It’s so much work and it’s so intense for the mother, and no mother should have to do it on their own.'“ - Ellen

Ellen’s postpartum experience

“I have never stopped in that way. I’ve never stopped for 40 days ever. It was crazy but I needed it.” - Ellen

“When the baby comes, you feel like your marriage becomes #2. But it shouldn’t. It needs to be number 1.” - Ellen

Episode 311: Beauty, Business and Good Moms: An Interview with mother-daughter duo Rea Ann Silva and Erica Dickerson of Beautyblender

Whoa, talk about a real GIRL POWER episode! This week we interview not just one, but TWO incredible super mamas: Rea Ann Silva, creator & founder of Beautyblender and her daughter, Erica Dickerson, Global Beauty Director of Beautyblender and podcast host of Good Moms, Bad Choices. The two have worked together basically since the conception of Beautyblender (when Erica started assembling products in the family garage!) and have since grown the business and their personal relationship. We talk to the duo about managing mom guilt, single motherhood, encouraging your children to follow their heart, and so much more. And of course, there is no shortage of beauty tips from these gorgeous ladies. We are obsessed with these two and the relationship they’ve created both at work and at home!

More about Rea Ann: Rea Ann Silva is a professional makeup artist and the creator and founder of Beautyblender. Her experience spans a nearly 30-year journey as one of the most sought-after Hollywood makeup artists in the industry. As the creative force behind Beautyblender, she single-handedly changed the beauty game. The Beautyblender concept came to Rea Ann while she was the Department Head of one of the first TV shows shot in hi-definition. Rea Ann handled the constant touch-ups with her hand-cut, edgeless sponges to mimic the seamless look of airbrushing. Soon, every celebrity that sat in Rea Ann’s chair wanted their own hand-cut sponge; thus creating the original edgeless sponge. Beautyblender quickly became the secret on set that had every pro talking.

Today, the category-creator holds countless beauty awards and is beloved by both makeup aficionados and newbies as the go-to tool for achieving a perfectly blended complexion. As Beautyblender expands, we continue to innovate easy-to-use products that require minimal efforts yet offer maximum results. In November 2020, Rea Ann was honored at the Smithsonian American Museum of Natural History in the “Only One in The Room” exhibit, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage.

More about Erica: Erica Dickerson is the Global Beauty Director of Beautyblender, host of the podcast Good Moms, Bad Choices and a content creator. Her history with Beautyblender began at conception...literally. As the daughter of Founder and CEO Rea Ann Silva, Erica was the brand’s “first-ever product assembler” back when Beautyblender began out of her mother’s garage in Los Angeles. Little did she know that her mom’s side project would turn into the most popular makeup tool in the world.

Before becoming Beautyblender’s Global Beauty Director, Erica pursued acting where she landed a handful of national commercials and major roles on shows like “Bones” on Fox and “Insecure” on HBO.

When she turned 18, Erica left Los Angeles to attend college at Marymount in New York City. After completing her first year, an opportunity arose to assist and road manage Grammy-winning artist, Macy Gray. Yearning to travel and get real work experience, she took the job and worked closely with Macy for three years while she toured the globe.

In 2010, as Beautyblender began expanding into consumer retail outlets like Sephora and the ever- growing social media landscape rapidly changing she became heavily involved in growing the digital side of the brand.

Conceptualizing, producing, and creating the brand voice for Instagram, Youtube, and Sephora’s education team, Erica has played a major role in Beautyblenders massive cult following. With the company’s rapid growth, she was tapped to help grow their Broadcast business where she currently appears on the HSN and QVC. She also works closely in product development creating many of the products that grace the shelves of Sephora and Beautyblender’s other global partners.

Aside from her full-time career in beauty, she is also the host of popular podcast, Good Moms Bad Choices. Over the last three years, she has helped develop a platform and safe space for mothers and women to share, listen and learn about all things related to parenthood, sex, culture, and mental health. Good Moms Bad Choices is rated in the top 5% of podcasts globally and continues to change the landscape of what is acceptable for mothers and WOC to seek, accept and discuss.

Through the success of her Podcast, she just signed a major book deal with Harper Collins based on GMBC and her experience navigating single motherhood slated to release in 2022. She has been featured in Vogue, BET, Good Housekeeping, XO Necole, and recently was honored by Create and Cultivate as one of the Top 100 Entrepreneurs of 2021.

Erica currently resides in Los Angeles with her daughter Irie Jane.

Episode 303: Empowerment, Support and Strength: Learning about Community Resources with Jessika Ahlberg of My Safe Harbor

Shining a spotlight on community resources is something we love, and today’s episode features one of our favorite organizations. This week we interview Jessika Ahlberg, program director at My Safe Harbor in Anaheim, California. This organization focuses on empowering mothers and strengthening families through education programs and community get togethers, and the success rate of program graduates is awe-inspiring. These are mothers who want to learn, work hard and support themselves and their families in ways that might not be possible without the resources provided by My Safe Harbor. We are honored to be able to donate to this wonderful group so that they may continue to support local moms who need encouragement in their lives and with their families. To learn more about this group and how you can help, listen to the rest of this episode and visit MySafeHarbor.org.

Before the episode, Bricia is talking about her new cookbook and the full on photoshoot production thats happening at her house! She also talks about last weekend, where the entire Lopez family got together at the park for a carne asada cookout for the book (and we taught you the right way to secure tables at the park LOL) and she also talks about her son’s freak accident.

A lesson from this episode

“You can’t be a good mother without mothering yourself first.”

Pick or tip of the week

Paulina’s pick is The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. She’s read it multiple times before and Bricia suggests even reading it once a year. Paulina goal is to pass the book around to everyone in the restaurant staff because she feels it always has new lessons to provide, no matter how many times you read it.

Bricia’s tip is from their life coach, Victor Pierantoni. He gave her a tip on how to take visulization to the next level. You visualize it from three points of view and read it every night. Check out their tips below and let us know if it works for you!

How to Visualize Your Goals into Reality

  1. Write it in your goal down in a journal as if it’s happening.

    example: You want 5 kids.

  2. Visualize someone talking to you about your goal and write it down as it someone is talking to you about it.

example: “Omg Bricia, I can’t believe you have 5 kids!”

  3. Visualize and write it down as if two people talking about it together.

Example: “Wow, did you see Bricia has 5 kids?! How does she do it?”

“She’s such a great mom! Her kids are great and so well behaved.”

Before the episode, we’re also talking about how big Augustina is getting! She’s getting ready to start her solid foods journey and Bricia is really focused on using the RIE parenting method again. We did an episode about this technique a few years ago, but we’re thinking it’s time for a refresher course! You can listen to that episode on Spotify here.

Also, Paulina might have shared a secret about her growing family on the episode. 😉 But you’ll have to tune in to find out!

Pick or Tip of the Week

Bricia is loving two protein powders right now. It’s so easy for her to add them to morning smoothies when she needs a quick breakfast.

  1. Ora Organic - There are a few different flavors but she loves vanilla.

  2. Four Sigmatic - This plant based protein gives Bricia so much energy, which is helpful because she’s detoxing from caffeine this month.

Paulina’s pick is also health related. She recently read an article about gut health and was inspired to do some more research for her nine year old, Krista, who is lactose intolerant. These Garden of Life probiotics for kids have helped her so much! Her skin condition and overall gut health have really improved. It reminded of an older episode we did about poop - yes, poop and the mind/gut connection. Maybe it’s time for a refresher episode on gut health too!.

Episode 251: Finding Our Core Selves & Changing the Likeability Trap with Alicia Menendez

This week’s interview is with powerhouse Alicia Menendez - MSNBC anchor, co-host of the podcast Latina to Latina, best selling author, and mother of two young daughters. Alicia is dropping straight GEMS 💎 in this episode! We talk about everything from how she balances her successful careers with motherhood to the meaning behind her book, “The Likeability Trap” and why it’s more complicated for women of color to feel likeable at work.

In Bricia’s words, Alicia “takes us to church” during this episode with knowledge she drops, but even Palina and Bricia were sharing real gems. Here are a few 💎:

“Sometimes you’re focusing on the work and sometimes you’re focusing on sharing the work and it doesn’t always have to be the same thing.” - Alicia

“You are no good to anyone else if you’re not taking care of yourself. “- Alicia

“It’s very rewarding to see what I am capable of doing. To know that I am more than what I thought I was.” - Paulina

“I look at her and I tell her, I want you to be a way better version of me and the only way you’re going to do that is if I become a better version of myself.” - Bricia

“If you grow up loving yourself and believing in yourself, how far can you go?” - Bricia

More about Alicia: Alicia Menendez is a journalist and multimedia storyteller. Named “Broadcast Journalism’s New Gladiator” by Elle Magazine, “Ms. Millennial” by The Washington Post, and a “Content Queen” by Marie Claire, Alicia has quickly become a force in American media. Alicia is the author of The Likeability Trap: How to Break Free and Succeed as You Are and an anchor for MSNBC. She is also a contributing editor at Bustle and host of its Latina to Latina podcast.

A native of Union City, New Jersey, Alicia is a graduate of Harvard College. She lives in New Jersey with her husband and two daughters.

Pick or Tip of the Week

All of Bricia’s tips right now are about babies! This month is Target Baby Month and there are new weekly deals for the whole month! Right now they are running their Car Seat Trade-in program where you drop off an old car seat to recycle and get a coupon to save 20% on select baby gear. Learn more about the program on Target.com.

Her pick for this week is more baby stuff, of course. Bricia’s favorite wipes of all time (for herself and Augustina) are the Honest wipes. They stay moist and don’t get stuck in the wipe warmer, making it easier for whoever is on diaper duty.

Paulina’s tip is Target Drive-up. It’s so much easier for her to load the girls in the car and get all of her items brought straight out to her car! Her other pick is the deep tissue percussion massager. If you’re keeping up with the podcast, you know she was injured a few weeks ago so she’s been focusing a lot on her recovery. Since she can’t go out to get a massage, she found this massager that’s really popular right now and has really helped her muscles after her workouts.

Episode 246: Throwback - What Does Motherhood Look Like to You & What Has Changed for Us

IMG_3322.jpeg

Bricia is still on a short maternity leave, so we’re bringing you a different kind of episode this week.

Before the episode, per our followers’ request, we have a special cohost introduce the episode with Paulina - our sister, Elizabeth! She’s so grown up and has been just as we have during quarantine. She shares some life updates with us and we also talk and laugh about how much has changed over the past two years since we recorded this episode. We love having Liz visit us on the show! Should we have her on for more episodes while we wait for Bricia to come back??

More about the throwback episode itself - remember our Super Mamas Hotline? We’re sharing a throwback episode from 2018 where we answer one of our listener’s questions from the Hotline from one of our listeners, Natalia, about how motherhood isn’t one size fits all, and that’s okay! Motherhood is a different, wild & crazy journey for all of us but we have each other and that’s what counts.

Take a look at the original show notes from a few years ago. Do you think we have changed since then? What are you loving and what do you wish we would bring back?

Call the Super Mamas Hotline at (424) 326-3707. Let us know how you’re doing in quarantine, what you’re up to with the kids, what questions you have for us. We want to hear from you!
